Review & Giveaway: Purex Complete Crystals Softener

I’ve been a Purex Insider for a while now really.  Because I am, I get to try out new products before they hit the market and give them feedback.

I agreed to be a Purex representative when, as you may recall,  Purex 3-in-1 sheets were free last year (and a couple of weeks ago).   Of course, I stocked up – not even knowing if I’d like them or not.  I was SO skeptical about how effectively they would clean. Also, we have a lot of skin sensitivity issues in our house, so I was really concerned about that when I got them.  (FYI: I’ve given away more free Gain in the last week or so than you can imagine because of that.)  I gotta tell ya – I was really surprised that the scent was light and fresh, but more importantly they clean well and we’re rash free.  On top of that, they are holy-moly-easy-to-use!?!  I mean, that’s the least of my concerns, but it has been a really helpful feature in a couple of sticky situations. For example, they were a great gift for my nephew when he went off to college. It’s so much easier for him to use these than drag around bottles of detergent and dryer sheets.  And we even brought them along when we traveled last year because they pack so easily.

That said, when I was offered the opportunity to try the new Purex Complete Crystals Softener, I was pretty excited.  These just hit stores on December 28th, so they are REALLY new.   Generally speaking, I’m one of those “If it isn’t broken….” kind of people.  But really, I found that traditional fabric softener IS broken.    In looking at them more closely, I’ll tell you what I learned and really like the best about the crystals – they’re oil free.  That matters to me a LOT.  I don’t want my clothes bathed in scented oil for a variety of reasons.  First, over time, oils build up and allow dirt to stick to the fabrics, aging them.   Second, these oils can interfere with the flame retardant treatment of my children’s sleepwear making them flammable.  That is really frightening.  Really, I could still go on and on about decreased towel absorbency and the impaired wicking ability of my workout clothes, but I think I’ve said enough. You can learn more about the others HERE.

The Purex Complete Crystals are completely different because they contain 92% natural ingredients and work by infusing the fabrics simply because they’re added at the beginning of the wash cycle and they have longer contact with the clothes.  That’s it.  It isn’t because anything adheres to the fibers.  The crystals come in three different scents: Fresh Spring Water, Lavender Blossom, and Tropical Splash.  I was given Fresh Spring Water to try.  And again, because I prefer unscented products, I was worried about sensitivities and an overpowering smell.  My clothes and bedding simply smell fresh and clean using the Purex Crystals.  We haven’t had any problems with sensitivities either.  Of course, that doesn’t guarantee that you won’t have problems, so use caution if you have trouble with scented products.

For me personally, I will continue to use the Purex crystals for the safety I get out of using them with flame retardant clothing, as well as the extended life of my clothes.  Over time, that will save me money and definitely give me more peace of mind.
