So, do you want to know what I’m up to?   I’m making a Trash Can Rain Barrel!   For much less than the cost to purchase a RTU Rain Barrel, you can make one just as easily!  This will save you a ton of money watering plants in your yard!  I made my first one three years ago and I need another now that we’re expanding our garden.

Here’s what you’ll need from Home Depot to put yours together, and the directions to get it done.  I’ll post my own How-To experience (complete with pictures) later this week, so you can see how mine came together.

DIY Trash Can Rain Barrel

1 – Rubbermaid Brute Trash Can with Lid (the bigger the better)
1 – Rubbermaid Brute Trash Can Dolly (optional, but useful if you want to wheel it around)
1 – Window Screen Kit or Easy Gardener WeedBlock Landscape Fabric (Use what you already have!)
1 – Garden Hose (optional)
1 – Homewerks Sillcock Valve or other valve – They have different types at Home Depot.
1  – Metal Washers
2 – Rubber Washers
1 – Locknut
* You may also need an Invisaflow or Flex-A-Spout downspout extension piece to allow direct flow into your rain barrel.

You’ll need:
Cordless/Corded Drill
Utility Knife
Staple Gun

1.)  Using a utility knife, cut out the circle area in the middle of the trash can lid.  This is why I like the Brute can over others because the lid is flat and has a circle area in the center that’s the perfect size for your hole in the lid.  If you have trouble getting it started, you can drill a small hole to give you a point area to get going with your utility knife.
*Note: If you’re savvy or need a hole closer to your downspout, you can cut a rectangular area between the circle area in the center and the edge of the lid.
2.) Cut a square piece of screen to sufficiently cover the hole in the trash can lid about 3 inches larger than the hole and staple it on the top of the lid.   Make sure the staples are very secure.
3.)  Depending on the size hole of your faucet, you can use a equal or slightly smaller size drill bit and carefully drill out a hole in the side of the trash can about 6″ from the bottom.
4.)  Wrap the thread area of the valve with plumbing tape.
5.)  Place a Metal Washer over the threaded area of the valve, then a Rubber Washer.
6.)  Push the threaded valve through the hole you drilled near the bottom of the can.
7.)  Place a rubber washer over the valve on the inside of the can.
8.)  Fasten securely to the can using a locknut on the inside of the can.
9.)  Attach the lid and place your Trash Can Rain Barrel under your downspout to start collecting FREE water!

If you plan to use a garden hose,  you’ll want to be sure that  your rain barrel is raised off the ground about  8″ to 12″ or so to promote water flow.
